Mine waste characterisation
Characterisation of mine waste is a key part of the rehabilitation planning process and mine planning process more generally. It has long been recognised that the accurate characterisation of mine waste is integral to identifying the most suitable post-mining land uses and appropriate rehabilitation practices for a site, particularly for sites with the potential for acid and metalliferous drainage. More recently, its importance has been further elevated as accurate characterisation is integral to successful valorisation of mine waste, a practice that will be vital to satisfy the global demand for critical minerals. The Office of the Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner is currently undertaking work to describe leading practice approaches to characterise mine waste.
